Renting the Right Tool for the Job

3 Minutes Posted on:

The right tool for the job is not always the one you have in your toolbox. Sometimes you need something unique, and those tools are typically expensive because they are specific for a job. Sometimes buying the tool you need is not practical, but you may be able to rent it from an equipment rental company.

Finding the Right Tools

If you are not sure what tool you need, you can talk with the employees at the tools rental shop about the job you are doing. Many times, the employees that work there have some background in many different trades, and working with tools every day makes it critical that they know what some of the specialty tools do and how to use them.

If you do know the tool you need, the staff at the rental shop can help you with it. If they do not carry it, they may be able to help you locate one at another equipment rental shop or they may be willing to get one for you then later add it to the inventory at the shop. If they feel there is a need for it, they may buy it so that other people can rent it as well.

Considering Small Equipment

Tractors and small equipment like skid steer loaders are often available through an equipment rental company as well. If you need a skid steer, a trenching machine, or a backhoe, you can rent them, but the equipment rental company may want to know that you have some experience with the equipment, so you do not damage it.

If you do not have experience with it, they can sometimes take the time to show you how to run it. You may want to find a friend or coworker that has the experience on the machine and can operate it for you. While you have the machine, they can show you how it works, and you can learn from an experienced operator so that next time you will know how to operate it.

Choosing Rental Periods

Sometimes the best time to rent an item is over the weekend because the rental company may not be open on Sunday. If this is the case, you can often rent the tool or equipment for Saturday, but because they are closed on Sunday, you will not have to return the item until Monday. Some shops will not charge you for Sunday because of this, so check with the rental company you are using. You could get an extra day for little to no additional cost if you can do the work over the weekend.
