How to Choose the Best Rain Gear for Work

3 Minutes Posted on:

If you work in construction, road work, or anywhere else you need to be outside the majority of the time, you know that the weather doesn't always cooperate. You can get some pretty rainy days. This can make for a miserable time working if you don't have the right rain gear to protect you from the wind and water.

While there are many brands on the market for rain gear, they aren't all created equal. It can hard to know what to choose that can ensure you will stay warm and dry for the duration of your shift. Here are some tips to help you find rain gear for work.

The Right Type of Material

The top thing you need to look for when choosing rain gear for work is, to find the right type of material. There is water-resistant material which is great for light rain or if you are only going from inside a vehicle to a building and won't be outside for long. This can be good for delivery drivers, or if you travel from different locations for inspections or meetings.

However, water-resistant isn't as good if you are outside working all day in heavy rainstorms. Water-resistant material can handle the rain for a shorter period before it will soak through and make your clothes wet. Instead, waterproof material is the better choice if you work construction or are outside for the majority of your shift.

The Weight and Durability of the Material

Waterproof material will also come in many different types as well. You can find heavier material which could be good for winter days or late fall cool weather. It will not only keep you dry but warm as well. The heavier material, however, might slow you down and feel overly heavy which could tire you out on the job.

You can get lightweight, waterproof material but if you live in a climate where it does get colder, you need to make sure it can handle the cold as well. It will be easier to work in, but might not keep you as warm.

Another factor in keeping you either cool or warmer while wearing rain gear for work is, the material needs to be breathable to let your body cool down while you work. If the material doesn't allow for this, you may end up cold or too hot anyway.

The fabric also needs to be durable to handle the type of work you are doing. Some fabrics might rip or tear too easily. Also, check out the stitching on your rain gear. Some types of stitching aren't as durable as others and could allow rips or tears due to your constant movements while working. Make sure it's double-stitched fabric or has a durable type of stitching like a hemstitch.
